Given here is a 2018 listing of 480+ current opportunities for United States hydropower development which the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has identified as priorities for future development.  

There are few practicing engineers who will not agree with the contention that since the 1980’s, America’s infrastructure has been allowed to languish in favor of  addressing various and sundry expensive environmental, social and regulatory issues.  Through providing the capacity to store then release electrical power at will with no emissions, hydropower offers the best opportunity to provide the revenue stream to pay down these national non-revenue-generating bills run up over the past four decades. 	

Hydropower construction and operation was a successful part of turning the U.S. economy around in the 1930’s.  Hydropower shall do so again.

These considerations are pertinent as when you build a hydrodam, you are building a lake as well as a hydroelectric power generating or flood control & irrigation facility.

Text Box: CO2 Upper Atmosphere Survey 

The Orbital Carbon Observatory satellite named OCO-2 is an engineering marvel worthy of the highest praise but it suffers from two grievous flaws: the TCCON support organization which provides the calibration mechanism for the sensors on this satellite is no longer providing updates and secondly, the column average CO2 content measurements necessary for calibration are not sufficiently accurate.  The solution?  One suggestion: rocket (sic) like it is 1962 with the eminently reliable and cost-effective “Black Brant” sounding rocket manufactured and designed by Magellan Aerospace.  With a parachute nosecone payload-mounted real-time full-spectrum spectrophotometric gas analyzer capturing and recording atmospheric gas content every 50 feet during the slow descent of the payload as it moves toward Earth from an altitude of up to 100 miles, truly accurate details can then be provided to the OCO-2 data analysis team based in the UK.  This reusable rocket can be launched to gather this data from 10 to 100 different points on the face of the Earth so that NASA’s OCO-2  is no longer flying blind through relying solely on computer models.  After all, empirical evidence is the whole ball game in science as it is in engineering.

This has never been done before:  formally validating, substantiating nor metricating  CO2’s actual influence on the atmosphere & climate of Earth.  The services of a licensed professional chemical engineer with omissions & errors insurance have never been secured to develop an empirical and lab-reproducible model of how carbon dioxide interacts on a molecular level on either a macro– or micro-scale with the components of Earth’s atmosphere. 

For this not to have been done makes both sides of the climate issue look like either supercilious demagogues or for-hire controversialists. 

Such research in theory would yield a patentable process whereby those engaged in carbon conversion circumstantially would be bound by law to license this knowhow developed prior to deploying their carbon conversion method.

While the data provided reflects the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ practice for hydroelectric dam design for the 1980’s, the same principles apply today.  For current design practice, the user of these documents must contact a regional USACE director’s office for pertinent updates specific to that identified opportunity, especially as regards more modern facilities modeling software tools than are described in these pages.

One option whereby power plant construction projects can be financed is through petitioning affected governments for the issuance of  Industrial Development Agency bonds.  Associated loan insurance underwriting is the linchpin of such funding strategies. Initial expenses  may approach as much as 10% and more of power project first costs which include FEED studies, underwriting costs, legal costs and other due diligence.

 

Through such actions one’s project is done de facto in partnership with the affected government which is one of the statutory safeguards built into  IDA  bond issuance  to ensure success of your project.

While these permanent reference works on the philosophy of science date from 1935 to 1965, the principles and methods described in them are even more valid than they were when these works were first published.  Please note also that the first few pages in “INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC AND THE SCIENTIFIC  METHOD”  are what is known as “errata sheets” which incorporate corrections to the original  work.  Please insert where indicated.

Text Box: This is an instructor’s comprehensive 1848 edition which happily omits giving precedence to mathematical proofs in favour of more visual and intuitive geometric validation though the work is complete as three volumes in one. The era’s dialect of the American English language sings out grandly in this work to compel the mentor to hold forth from these pages aloud.  Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott come to mind.

“The Ghost In The Machine” explains, as a useful workforce project management reference,  the    dynamics of  how naturally-occurring and human-designed systems interact when adapting to external change and does so in non-mathematical language.  These concepts have saved  clients  hundreds of thousands of dollars when  this firm was under contract  servicing complex manufacturing quality control/quality assurance technical writing scopes of work as well as in support of large construction & manufacturing  labor  estimate projects. 

 

IMO one quick read-through of this work will vastly improve your labour calculations, Gantt charts and CPM  charts.
